The Intermediate School was built on a tight lot in between the Administration Building and the district’s event center. The event center, which is tied to the new Intermediate School by a connecting corridor, is used daily for the cafeteria and kitchen. Over the duration of the project, the entire campus was occupied and Journeyman had the whole area fenced off so that there were no disruptions to the campus activities.

The school consists of 3rd – 5th grade classrooms, science classrooms, special education classrooms, collaboration areas with skylights above, library with custom made pirate ship reading area, administration area, counseling, life skills and flex rooms.

This is a single-story building with slab on grade foundation, load bearing CMU walls, brick veneer, steel framed roof structure and built-up roofing. On-site improvements and site amenities include driveways, parking areas, circular paved drop off area with aluminum canopy, utilities, fencing and digital marquee sign.

In 2009 Journeyman built the first new school for Mathis ISD in 50 years, Mathis Middle School. They were happy to work with us again on this exciting new Intermediate School.

The Austin Resource Center for the Homeless is a full-service training and administration facility that opened in 2004. The 26,820 sf building features over 100 beds, a health clinic, a laundry room, cafeteria, pharmacy, computer and art rooms and office space for various welfare agencies.

The Resource Center is a LEED Silver-rated building in accordance with the US Green Building Council. As such, its construction focused on the implementation of sustainable site development, water conservation, energy efficiency, material selection and indoor air quality. Some of its progressive features include a rainwater collection system, active and passive solar systems, sealed concrete floors, sheet linoleum floors and other low maintenance finishes.

The client was very pleased with the quality of the finished product. A small delay was experienced in product delivery because of record rainfalls during the year. The client accommodated the delays and no additional costs were added to the project.

Sustainability consulting was provided by Gail Vittori, Center for Maximum Potential Building Systems (CMPBS).

This new magnet high school is a partnership between Del Mar College and the Corpus Christi Independent School District. The facility was designed to help students explore highly-skilled career paths in a collaborative setting. Students will earn high school and college credits as well as industry-standard certifications concurrently at this high school.

The project was originally over the school district’s budget. Journeyman Construction worked with the owner and architect and provided ample value engineering items in an effort to reduce school district’s cost. Once negotiations were complete, Journeyman Construction helped CCISD save $410,000.

The new high school is designed around a central entry axis with a raised entry tower. The main circulation is organized along a cross axis with nine typical classrooms and one science lab. Other spaces include media library, multi-purpose room, delivery kitchen and administrative offices. The building has a carton form slab, structural steel, modified bituminous roof system, brick veneer exterior, chilled water system, polished concrete floors, skylights for natural lighting, landscaping, irrigation and a large parking lot.

Timing was very important to the school district. Journeyman had a strict deadline to complete the building so that it could be occupied by the time the fall school semester started. Journeyman turned over exactly when promised.

The Annemarie Tennis Center construction consisted of a complete demolition of the existing 10 court facility. A mass excavation of over 20,000 cy was removed from the site and replaced with 20,000 cy of A #2 base material in 8” lifts. The concrete work on this project took three crews to complete digging 5’ deep grade beams and placing over 4,000 cy of concrete.

We also installed a state-of-the-art sports lighting system by Musco Lighting that required over 15 miles of conduit and wires to be placed below ground. A new 18’ tall chain link fence was installed around a 2,500 lf portion of the site.

The 18 court facility will hold 300 eager on lookers in the 19 covered aluminum bleachers situated throughout the site. The 40,000 sf paver area is a great cosmetic addition to this facility and provides a functional staging area for tournaments. Journeyman also had the opportunity to build a state-of-the-art shot put and discus facility including new pads, rings, cages, toe boards, and a 30 ft tall sports netting system designed to protect adjacent sporting events.
